This is Learning.

But why have we made it, and what can you expect? There are two answers to that: a short answer and a longer one.

The Short Answer

This platform works on your mobile phone, tablet, or laptop and shares relevant learning resources. It has a range of communities based on different criteria and can also be used to book events and activities. We want this to be filled with lived experience, theory, and real-life examples from those shaping the care for Young People across the country.

The Longer, More Detailed Answer

This platform was born from the idea that together, we could create a learning community that we can access at a time and place that is convenient for us all. Through conversations with Foster Parents, Young people, Colleagues, Experts in the field of Young People, and those with Care Experience, we created a list of challenges we face. This list would inform all the conversations and resources created henceforth. We had interesting conversations, discussing everything from supporting young people when they first came to live with us to supporting family members with menopause. We talked about how we support young people who are transitioning their outward gender, how we welcome an adopter into our homes to build a relationship with someone we have cared for and the emotional challenges of a Young Person leaving our care. We also talked about how we help young people find their passions, role models, and the hooks in life that will propel them into their future.

What was clear was the sheer amount of experience and the diverse voices and opinions within all these areas, and this was great news. Fostering is like no other area. There is no one-size-fits-all, but what there is, are opportunities to take useful techniques and practices from those we hear from to develop the care we offer to our Young People.

The platform is designed to support this; you will see and hear from Foster Carers sharing their stories. From those working in the field with Young People and what challenges they are facing and from those who have been through the care system and are now helping shape what it looks like for the future. All of these things are designed to support the day-to-day challenges we face.

We are also aware that we are busy with school runs and meetings, and we provide day-to-day care for those living with us, to name just a few things. As such, we are working hard to present the learning resources to you in various ways. Be that video, audio podcast, or written content. We should be able to match your preferences for learning at that moment alongside consideration for neurodivergence and additional needs. We won't always get it right, but my door is open, and I welcome thoughts and comments on how to develop your learning platform.

Alongside this, over time, we will develop our more formal, traditional learning, ensuring that we remain compliant and skilled in the areas these compliances cover.

So please take some time to have a look around the platform, download the app so you can find what you need on the go, and please do reach out to me with any thoughts or ideas on how we can make this platform live and evolve as the needs of our Young People evolve.

Not at present. This platform is a new idea for us, and as such we want to see how it works in the real world. What is useful on here and what is not and this will take some time. We would really welcome your thoughts and ideas on what the future of Fuse looks like so that together, we can use it in a way that is useful in supporting us all.

This platform is designed to support learning. Learning can take lots of different forms. At launch, it wont contain any traditional forms of “e-learning” where you click through to complete and gain a certificate. Instead, it will focus on resource and knowledge-based learning. This means we hope that you find it so useful you choose to come here, to engage with it and to share your own experiences.

Adult Learning Theory

Adult learning theory explains how adults learn differently from children. Adults bring previous experiences, knowledge, and self-awareness to the table, which shapes the way they prefer to learn. The most well-known theory comes from Malcolm Knowles, who introduced the concept of andragogy, which means the art and science of helping adults learn.

Self-Direction: Adults like to take control of their learning. They don’t want to be spoon-fed information. Instead, they want to decide what they learn, how they learn it, and why it’s relevant to them. They appreciate having choices and being treated like capable individuals. – This platform in in your hands, you choose what to take from the menu we have put in front of you.

Experience: Adults rely on their past experiences when learning something new. They often connect new knowledge to things they already know. This is a big difference from how children learn, as adults use these experiences as a foundation for understanding new concepts. – By presenting you with a range of bitesize learning, you can interject these with what you know already. You don’t need to engage with a whole topic to find the thing you need if you already have knowledge in the area.

Goal-Oriented: Adults usually learn with a purpose. They often have a clear reason for why they want to learn something, whether it’s to improve their job skills, solve a personal problem, or explore a new interest. They want learning to be practical and directly applicable to their lives – The search function here will allow you to find the things you need. Think of it as our own version of google but with less mis-information and created by people just like you and I.

Relevance: Adults need to see the relevance of what they’re learning. If it doesn’t relate to their personal or professional life, it’s much harder for them to stay engaged. They need to understand “what’s in it for them” early on – If you’ve come to the platform, its because you need or want something, our job is to make sure what you need is easy to find here and then its down to you to apply it.

Respect: Adults expect to be treated with respect during the learning process. They want their opinions and experiences valued and not be treated like they are back in school. Learning is most effective when it's a collaborative process, not one-way instruction – You will see lots of opportunities to share your experience and knowledge, ask questions and reflect. We might not always all agree, but the two-way street of respect will help us all to take ownership of our learning.

The Podcast...

Yes there is, it’s a private podcast meaning its not open to the public, read on to find out how to subscribe to it.

A podcast is a conversation between people about a topic in which they have an interest or level of experience. It is meant to be generally informal and oftentimes is opinion-based. In our instance here, they are not scripted. We like to think of it as being a "fly on the wall" for a conversation you are interested in.

Oftentimes, people might listen to a podcast on a commute or have it playing whilst doing another task. Some of the topics our Podcast episodes cover, might not be suitable for younger ears, and as such, please take that into consideration when listening.

Some of our podcast episodes also have video versions, should you wish to watch along. You will find these versions in the episode articles.

No. Our learning podcast is designed to be listened to only by those within our agencies. You can listen either through this app or within your preferred listening app.

Yes please! We want to continue to fill our podcast with a whole range of voices, including yours. If you want to be a part of this, then send us a message. We will be in touch to find a time to talk about the practicalities of making this work and then go from there.

If you don't want to listen to the podcast on the go and are happy listening through your laptop or phone then this option might work for you. To listen, simply visit the Podcast page and tap "play" on the episode you want to listen to.

If you click this link, you will be invited to be added to the private podcast list

-Enter your email address

- Check your email and click the link that is sent to you (it should arrive from mail.transistor.fm)

- It should look something like this:

You will then be asked which app you would like to listen to the podcast through.

The apps listed are:

Apple Podcasts: Download on iPhone (generally already installed)

Pocket Casts: Download on Android

Overcast: Download on iPhone

These are all free apps, and you will not have to pay for them. If you decide to install them, you can listen to the podcast in there without following these steps again.

This step will not be necessary for a lot of people, but if you do want to subscribe to the podcast in a different app, then red on...

- Click the button that says "Copy RSS Feed URL"

- The button will turn to saying "Copied"

- Open your podcast app on your Phone / Tablet

- This next step will differ based on the app you use, however you want to look for something that says "Add show from URL" or "Add RSS Podcast"

- When prompted, tap to paste the link in - This should add the podcast into your app. When a new episode is added, you will see it within.

Currently, Spotify doesn't allow private podcasts unless you "pay" to subscribe to them. If this changes, we will update our information.
