A day in the life of Training Officer Emma
Here at Unity Foster Care, we’re proud to have an amazing team, who work tirelessly to support our community of foster carers, children and young people.
One such team member is our Training Officer Emma, whose role is to ensure staff and foster carers are supported in completing their training.
Can you please tell us a bit about yourself?
My name is Emma, and I’m a Training Officer at Unity Foster Care. My role involves making sure all our team members and foster carers are trained to the very best of their ability. I attend regular support groups and put a plan together for what the year ahead will look like. We have a refreshed training programme each year to make sure we keep up to date with best practices, as well as bespoke courses that are available to the Unity Foster Care network. I am also a mum of two, with a crazy cockapoo to look after!
How did you end up in your current role?
I found myself drawn to this sector as I wanted to work with young people. This role seemed perfect, as I could still be involved in events and participation, whilst using my previous administration experience.
What does a typical day look like for you?
Emails, lots of emails! I then look at my electronic calendar and start on the day’s tasks, before checking if all our training dates are planned and uploading any certificates received to our internal system. I coordinate our foster carer support groups in the Yorkshire, Hull and Northeast regions and arrange for different speakers to attend, so this is looked at every week.
A big part of my role is also arranging for external trainers to come in and extend the training portfolios for all our carers. This is looked at weekly too to make sure we have the training days full and everyone is aware of what is coming up next.
What is the best thing about your role?
No day is the same, and I haven’t had a quiet day in six years working here! It’s always busy. I try to help staff where possible with training and general admin. The time flies, and I learn something new every day!
What do you get up to in your spare time?
I love to spend quality time with my husband and children. We also like to socialise with friends and family regularly and get away for a break wherever possible.
